The construction of Gottfried Semper’s First Royal Hoftheater began in 1838. The opera house was opened on 12.04.1841 with a performance of Goethe’s play Torquato Tasso and Weber’s Jubel-Ouvertüre. The work of Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner in Dresden (1843-1848) had a far-reaching effect on the programme. Semper’s first building was destroyed by fire in 1869.
The world-famous Semperoper building which can be admired today dates back to this time. The construction of Gottfried Semper’s Second Royal Hoftheater began on 26.04.1871. The building work was managed by his son Manfred. The new building opened on 2 February 1878 with a performance of Weber’s Jubel-Ouvertüre and Goethe’s Iphigenie auf Tauris.
Following a number of prominent directors, Karl Böhm took over the helm at the Dresden opera house – a development which was seen as favourable. Between 1934 and 1943 he successfully maintained the reputation of the opera house. However, its reputation was also enhanced by the many outstanding members of the ensemble, a number of whom achieved legendary status. The Semperoper was closed on 31.08.1944 and was destroyed on 13.02.1945 during the great bombing raid on Dresden. Initially, the exterior of the building was restored between 1952 and 1956. The decision was made during the 1970s to reconstruct the building in keeping with the original design. After eight years’ building work, the opening premiere took place on 13 February 1985 – a performance of Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz.*
After the extraordinary floods of 2002 the opera house which has a long tradition had to endure the ordeal of yet another renovation. The Dauphin HumanDesign® Group, as an office-furniture manufacturer with a global presence from Offenhausen near Nuremberg, was a competent partner of the Organisational Department of the Sächsischer Staatsoper Dresden, offering both help and advice. The entire Administration Wing for approximately 800 members of staff was to be redesigned according to a “dynamic seating culture” concept. This extensive project included furnishing the Managing Director’s office, the meeting rooms, the Design Department as well as the workshop offices and the workshop cafeteria.
The Cento Miglia executive swivel chair – a flamboyant design showpiece from Dauphin (design: Design Office / Kerstin Hagge, Alfred Puchta) – plays the leading role in Managing Director Roland Beneke’s office.
Cento Miglia was the compelling choice thanks to its simple styling in a remarkably wide range of designs. In leather, fabric or with a transparent mesh cover. Cento Miglia offers seated excellence in the truest sense of the word. The swivel chair was awarded the “Innovationspreis Architektur und Office” (Prize for Innovation in Architecture and the Office) in the “Möbel für Architekten” (Furniture for Architects) competition run by the specialist architecture magazine AIT.
Cento Miglia also fulfills ergonomic requirements: the Syncro®-Dynamic feature with patented weight balance and large opening angle (backrest tilt of up to 128°) guarantees perfect ergonomic seated comfort for a dynamic seated posture with the body in an upright position.
In the case of the furnishings for the meeting rooms, in the Managing Director’s office and in the Design Department, the beautifully designed cantilever chairs from Dauphin’s Alpha range of products perform masterfully. Alpha won over the Organisers thanks to its graceful beauty and supreme comfort (design: Dauphin Design-Team).
In the workshop offices of the Semperoper there is a hectic atmosphere with constant comings and goings. The innovative Go Ahead swivel chair from Dauphin is ideal here for providing a few moments’ relaxation. With its large opening angle of 128 degrees it allows a creative pause for thought or telephone conversations in a reclined, physically relaxed position (design: Dauphin Design-Team). Unique in terms of its functions and unequalled in technical terms, Go Ahead is without doubt part of the first cast for the Workshop Team at the Semperoper.
Go Ahead also features the Syncro®-Dynamic feature for perfect seated comfort. The seat and backrest constantly follow the movements of the user synchronously, thus ensuring the correct seated posture. If the chair is adjusted once to a person’s individual body weight, a balanced seated posture is achieved thanks to the backrest pressure which remains constant.
Let the show begin! The graceful models from Dauphin’s Froggy range (design: Manfred Herrmann) were the ideal choice when furnishing the workshop cafeteria and the meeting rooms.
The brightly-coloured Froggy multi-purpose chair is versatile and easy to stack and makes a clear statement in any room. Its unmistakable design, the wide choice of trim and colours and the wide range of functional accessories create the most modern ensembles. Members of staff are surprised by a “new” Froggy set in any room.
A perfect composition! “Front-row” seating from Dauphin for members of staff at the Semperoper.
